GP Journeys: From Cork to Vincentia

GP Journeys: From Cork to Vincentia

The rolling green hills of Ireland are a world away from the white sand beaches of Jervis Bay (NSW), but for Dr Sruthi Mohan, her recent move from Cork in Ireland to Vincentia in the heart of Jervis Bay, has made her dream of working as a GP in Australia a reality.

Dr Mohan completed her medical training in her home country of South Africa and gained her FCFP qualification, before relocating to Cork.

“I’d always hoped to work in Australia, but the first few agencies I spoke with didn’t seem confident my training would be transferable, so I travelled to Ireland to build on my experience,” says Dr Mohan.

“But when I saw an advert for GP positions in NSW from DXC Medical and contacted Darren, my hope returned. Darren contacted me within 24 hours of my initial enquiry, and really took the time to understand my position. Right from that first conversation, he was proactive in helping make my idea of an Australian move a reality.”

After assessing Dr Mohan’s credentials, the DXC Medical team were confident she could gain substantial comparability through the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) Specialist Pathway, meaning she wouldn’t need to sit exams in Australia to have her qualifications recognised.

Dr Mohan initially made contact with DXC Medical in November 2021, and less than 12 months later has arrived in Australia to start her new role with a small local medical practice in Vincentia, an area famed for its pristine beaches and stunning scenery:

“I really appreciate the clarity of communication from Darren and the DXC Medical team,” she says.

“Right from the beginning, they were really clear on the steps we’d need to follow and how long things would take. Originally I wasn’t considering Jervis Bay, but Darren talked me through the location and it sounded perfect for our family. From the word go, I understood the process, and their predictions on timeframes were spot on. It’s really helped with our forward planning in moving our family here from the otherside of the world.”

To assist Dr Mohan with the process, DXC Medical connected her with other international medical graduates who’d recently completed the ACRRM interview and gained substantial comparability, which helped with interview preparation.

“Speaking with other South African doctors who’d followed the same process was really helpful, and the DXC Medical team also helped us with an introduction to a migration agent who’s succeeded in securing our family a 482 TSS visa. I’m really looking forward to getting to know our new home, and exploring the local beaches and beautiful ocean,” says Dr Mohan.

DXC Medical is committed to improving health outcomes within communities throughout Australia, by helping source high quality General Practitioners for Australian communities, especially in regional and rural areas. We wish Dr Mohan and her family all the best in their new life in beautiful Jervis Bay, NSW.
